Day 3. Calvo again in the quarters, this time with ‘Vikinga’ Osoro

The NextGen of world padel also shines in Asunción. Martjna Calvo has yet to turn 17, and in the last Qatar Airways Premier Padel Tour tournament she reached the quarterfinals, paired with Marta Borrero, before losing to Ale Salazar and Veronica Virseda. On the other side of the world, Calvo – the youngest player to reach the quarterfinals in a Premier – avenged that defeat, this time paired with ‘Vikinga’ Aranzazu Osoro, qualifying again for the quarters: a 6-2 6-1 win, that of Calvo and Osoro, which gave them the challenge versus Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay. The other three quarterfinals of the women’s draw will feature the top seeds: Sanchez/Josemaria (1)-Ortega/Alonso (5), Icardo/Jensen (8)-Gonzalez/Fernandez (3), Araujo/Ustero (4)-Sainz/Llaguno (6).

MEN If the one formed by Calvo and Osoro is the only non-seeded pair to have reached the quarterfinals in Paraguay, four ‘parejas’ have reached them in the men’s draw. The outstanding tournament of José Diestro and Juanlu Esbri continued: after eliminating Javi Garrido and Tino Libaak, they did the same against Lucas Bergamini and Paquito Navarro (7). For Diestro and Esbri today, it’s a challenge to FIP No. 1-ranked Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia in the second match of the afternoon session starting at 5 p.m. local time (10 p.m. CET). The other pairs out of the 8 seed to have qualified for the quarters are Cardona/Augsburger (thanks to success over No. 5 Gonzalez/Sanz), Ruiz/Gil (who eliminated Yanguas and Nieto) and Chozas/Gutierrez. These are the other quarters: Cardona/Augsburger-Stupaczuk/Lebron (3), Ruiz/Gil-Di Nenno/Tello (6), Chozas/Gutierrez-Chingotto/Galan (2).

At the Ueno SND Arena, the morning session will begin at 10 a.m. local time, 3 p.m. CET.
