Day 5. Triay, a special victory: final with Brea and new number 1 in FIP ranking
May 25, 2025
A long trip to the throne of Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez, leading the FIP ranking for 107 weeks. In Asunción, Gemma Triay rewrote recent padel history, qualifying for the final of the Paraguayan Premier Padel P2 and returning world No. 1. First with Marta Ortega, then with Claudia Fernandez, now with Delfi Brea: a comeback marked by titles and finals, until the overtaking came thanks to Paula and Ari’s defeat in the first semifinal against Gonzalez and Fernandez, last year’s teammates just like Brea and Triay. A 6-4 6-3 in one hour and 24’ was followed by a 6-2 6-1 win by Delfi and Gemma over Sofia Araujo and Andrea Ustero, who close out their first tournament together on Saturday. “I don’t give much importance to number 1, at least until December – commented Triay –. What matters is to be satisfied with the level we continue to show, how our training continues to pay off, and how we continue to follow our game plan and get the results we are looking for”. At 4 p.m. local time, 9 p.m. CET, Brea and Triay will go hunting their fifth 2025 title after Gijon, Cancun, Miami and Doha. Bea and Claudia, on the other hand, will play their first final since they were forced to forfeit in Riyadh.
MEN Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia will remain No. 1 in the men’s FIP ranking, but they will not play in the Asunción final after being eliminated by José Diestro and Juanlu Esbri. The most surprising pair in the P2 in the Paraguayan capital, however, end their journey in the semifinals against another pair that was not among the seeded players, that formed by Pablo Cardona and Leo Augsburger, who qualified for their first final thanks to a double 6-4 6-4 victory. The ‘Carburger’ will take on Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan, who in the bottom half of the draw respected the predictions by overcoming Martin Di Nenno and Juan Tello, 6-2 6-3. After Miami and Santiago, and after their five titles in 2024, the ‘Chingalans’ want to get back to winning ways.
