Day 1. Coki Nieto seeks glory where he has already won. Today it’s time for the stars
July 1, 2025
A year ago, at the Arkéa Arena, Coki Nieto won one of his two titles of the season. Playing alongside Jon Sanz, the current number 8 in the FIP ranking was crowned king of Bordeaux, and he would repeat the feat at the end of the season in the Premier Padel Finals in Barcelona. Nieto, who is playing with Mike Yanguas this year, seeded number 4, has not reached the semi-finals since the Major in Doha: since then, he has been eliminated twice in the round of 16, twice in the quarter-finals and once in the first round in Valladolid against Fran Guerrero and Javi Leal. At the Patinoire de Mériadeck, he’s trying to rediscover his winning feeling: in the first round of the Premier Padel Betclic Bordeaux P2, Nieto and Yanguas defeated French wild cards Dylan Guichard and Maxime Joris 6-2 6-2, and now in the round of 16 they could once again face Guerrero and Leal.
One of the pairs of the moment, however, will have to beat one of the new “parejas” on court in Bordeaux, Alex Chozas and Miguel Lamperti, to reach the second round. They are not the only ones making their debut in France: Sanyo Gutierrez and Gonza Alfonso have already done so with a victory, and today Tolito Aguirre and Javi Garrido – another player who, like Coki Nieto, wants to return to glory – will do this against Gonzalo Rubio and Javi Ruiz, coming from their victory in Italy in the FIP Silver Mediolanum Padel Cup in Palermo. On centre court, in a programme opened by French Lea Godallier, who with Spanish Laura Lujan faces Bea Caldera and Lorena Rufo, the two best pairs in the world will perform today: first Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia versus Juan Cruz Belluati and Pablo Lijo, then Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan versus Inigo Jofre and Alex Arroyo, in a tournament that has seen the withdrawal of Juan Lebron and Franco Stupaczuk and, among the women, of Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay.
