July 20, 2025
Valladolid, Bordeaux and now Malaga. Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia have stepped up a gear, winning their third consecutive title in the Qatar Airways Premier Padel, the seventh in this season. The Palacio de Deportes José M. Martin Carpena crowned the world number ones for the second consecutive year; in the women’s draw, full of surprises with the elimination of the top two seeds in the quarter-finals, Bea Gonzalez (born in Malaga) and Claudia Fernandez, on a day when Malaga, her family and the world of padel paid tribute to Carolina Navarro, also born in the Andalusian city, who played this tournament for the last time in her career.
MEN Coello and Tapia, in one hour and 16 minutes, defeated Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan for the 14th time in 20 matches (the fourth in five matches in 2025) with a score of 6-4 7-5. While the break in the ninth game was decisive in the first set, the second set was even more evenly balanced, broken at 6-5 by Arturo and Agus, who closed out the match on their first match point. “I love this city – admitted Tapia –. I have few words to describe the emotions I am feeling: thank you to everyone who works to make this the best week possible for us. And thanks to Arturo, as every week, for being by my side”. “Congratulations to Fede and Ale for everything they put on the court. As always, the matches against them are very difficult – said Coello –. They push us to raise our level every time. Winning is never easy, but we managed to do it again this time”.
WOMEN Bea Gonzalez and Claudia Fernandez were the first to win the final in Malaga, but the score (6-2 6-1) should not be misinterpreted. The number 3 seeds had to battle for an hour and 36 minutes (the women’s final lasted 20 minutes longer than the men’s) to beat Marta Ortega and Tamara Icardo. Bea was particularly excited, supported by the crowd in her hometown: “I’m delighted to have won the title here at home – she said –. I’m super happy to have played in front of these people and to have played a great match. But Claudia was spectacular too”. The two winners racked up 27 smashes and 43 winners. “I dedicate this victory to Bea, who was born here, and I’m happy to have helped her win here – added Claudia –. I think I played very well in all aspects”.
The Qatar Airways Premier Padel Tour will remain in Spain: from 27 July to 3 August, the CUPRA Costa Daurada Tarragona P1 will be played.
