Brea and Triay still on top: they will be number 1 seeded in Madrid. Fourth title in a row for Coello and Tapia

The masterpiece is complete. With their triumph in the P1 in Tarragona, Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay have rewritten the history of the Qatar Airways Premier Padel Tour. In Madrid, in the P1 that will reopen the season in September after the summer break, Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez – beaten 7-6 6-4 at the Palau d’Esports Catalunya – will not be the number 1 seeds for the first time in a tournament they will play.

Replacing them will be Delfi and Gemma, who decided to team up at the beginning of 2025 to challenge for the top spot in the rankings, already achieved by the Spaniard, and in the tournament draws, which will happen from September, although Josemaria and Sanchez are unlikely to give up.

They didn’t do that in the final in Tarragona either, after losing a very close first set in a tiebreak: Brea and Triay, leading 5-3 in the second set, scored what seemed to be the decisive break, but the Spanish pair’s reaction led to an immediate counterbreak. However, Delfi and Gemma were more lucid at the decisive moment, closing 6-4 and winning their sixth title of the season after Gijon, Cancun, Miami, Doha and Rome.

“I’m really happy, it’s been a spectacular week – said Delfi, who received a balloon with the number 1 on it during the interview –. And I’m also happy for all the team members who are often not seen and who work with us every day. I recognise the value of Paula and Ari, and that’s why achieving a result like this is such a joy”. “Congratulations to Delfi, it wasn’t easy to win after her injury – added Triay, recalling the withdrawal from Valladolid and the forfeit in Bordeaux –. If you work hard, give it your all and go to bed knowing you’ve done that, the results will come”.

MEN Results that continue to come in the men’s tournament for Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia: with Tarragona, they have won eight tournaments in 2025, with the possibility of doing even better than in 2024, when Arturito and Agus stopped at 14. The match against Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan, the “Clasico” of padel, was a final that was as beautiful and balanced as ever, with the usual magic of the four best players in the world, and with Tapia’s exit from the door in the second set set to become one of the most beautiful points of the season. While the number ones closed out the first set tiebreak 7-3, the decisive break for the second set victory came in the 12th game, just one step away from another tiebreak.

“A lot of things went through my mind at the end of the match – admitted Tapia –. If we hadn’t been 100%, we wouldn’t have won this final, and as always, I have to thank Arturo, who is a great friend and fights for every point. Today we end the first part of the year in the best possible way: I thank everyone who is close to us, and thank you Tarragona for supporting us”. “Only those who play sport know how much it hurts to be away from your family – added Coello -. That’s why the team is so important and having a partner like Agustin by your side. I congratulate “Chingo” and Galan because they are an incredible pair, and also Delfi and Gemma for becoming the world’s top pair. Now comes a period that will be good for everyone, see you soon”.

During the award ceremony, attended by FIP president Luigi Carraro and in a once again sold-out Palau d’Esports Catalunya (4,500 fans, as in the semi-finals), the soundtracks for Coello, Tapia, Brea and Triay were Tina Turner’s ‘The Best’ and Queen’s ‘We are the Champions’. The best Arturo and Agustin, the best Delfi and Gemma: champions in Tarragona, the last tournament of an exciting first part of the season. The Qatar Airways Premier Padel Tour will come back in the first week of September with the P1 in Madrid, which will precede the third Major of the year, at Roland Garros.
