Day1. Aimar Goñi’s dream continues: at Roland Garros versus Coello and Tapia
September 9, 2025
Just over a month ago, in Tarragona, Aimar Goñi surprised everyone by reaching the quarterfinals with Mario Ortega after starting in the qualifiers. Few knew the giant (195 cm tall) born in 2005, who in the meantime has changed partners, joining forces with Lucho Capra and beating Javi Valdes and Agustin Gutierrez 6-2 7-6 to fulfill his dream of playing in one of the temples of world sport, the Philippe Chatrier court against world number ones Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia, who have had the opportunity to train in this legendary stadium in recent hours. The match is scheduled as the second one of a program starting at 11 a.m., with Marta Ortega and Tamara Icardo opening the day against Manquillo/Lujan.
MEN For Coello and Tapia, winners at Roland Garros for the last two years, it will also be a chance to redeem themselves after their defeat in final in Madrid. On Philippe Chatrier, after Coello and Tapia, it will be time for Juan Lebron and Franco Stupaczuk, versus Flavio Abbate and Manuel Castaño, while not before 6 p.m., it will be Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan’s turn against Portuguese brothers Nuno and Miguel Deus. Court number 6 will finally welcome the Madrid champions, Martin Di Nenno and Leo Augsburger. Maxi Arce and Pablo Lijó, surprises of the Madrid P1 and able of reaching the quarterfinals, lost 6-1 6-4 to Collado/Hernandez.
WOMEN While waiting for the debut of the top four seeds, the women’s draw also got underway, with Lucia Garcia and Nati Lopez Diaz – queens of the CUPRA FIP Tour – coming close to pulling off an upset against Bidahorria/Arruabarrena. Monica Gomez and the evergreen Carolina Navarro, on the other hand, made it through the first round with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Marta Talavan and Teresa Navarro. Finally, at 8 p.m., the entire Parisian crowd is ready to cheer on Alix Collombon, who will make her debut alongside Araceli Martinez versus Aida Martinez and Ana Dominguez.
