Day3. Rubio-Ruiz, from the CUPRA FIP Tour to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros in four days
September 11, 2025
Just last Sunday, Gonzalo Rubio and Javi Ruiz won a FIP Silver tournament in Oeiras (Portugal), the third CUPRA FIP Tour tournament in three months after Palermo and Crete. Four days later, with a 6-2 1-6 7-6 victory over Sanyo Gutierrez and Gonza Alfonso, Rubio and Ruiz reached the quarterfinals of the Premier Padel Alpine Paris Major: a marathon lasting two hours and 36 minutes, which allowed the two Spanish to be the only unseeded pair to reach the quarterfinals scheduled for tomorrow in two iconic Roland Garros stadiums, Philippe Chatrier and Suzanne Lenglen. Rubio and Ruiz will close the program on the latter court against Mike Yanguas and Coki Nieto (4). Fran Guerrero and Javi Leal scored another upset victory in a tournament that has already delivered several surprises: the number 10 seeded pair eliminated Juan Tello and Pablo Cardona (8) with a double 6-3. Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia conceded two games to Guille Collado and Pol Hernandez (Javier Barahona and Javi Garcia will be in the quarterfinals), while Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan conceded one to Inigo Jofre and Alex Arroyo (Edu Alonso and Jairo Bautista in the quarterfinals).
WOMEN The top four seeds in the women’s draw made a winning debut: Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay defeated Marina Guinart and Victoria Iglesias 6-2 6-3 and tomorrow will face Ksenia Sharifova and Virginia Riera, who came back to defeat Ale Salazar and Martina Calvo (8) with a score of 4-6 6-1 6-4, while Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez (2) began their title defense with a 6-3 6-0 victory over Marta Barrera and Marta Caparros. Three games (6-1 6-2) were conceded by Madrid champions Bea Gonzalez and Claudia Fernandez to Lara Arruabarrena and Julieta Bidanorria, and five (6-3 6-2) by Andrea Ustero and Sofia Araujo to Alix Collombon and Araceli Martinez. The other feat of the day, besides that of Sharifova and Riera, was that of Bea Caldera and Carmen Goenaga, seeded number 11, who defeated Claudia Jensen and Ale Alonso, seeded number 6, 6-2 6-2.
