Day3. Garrido’s comeback: A Brazilian derby for Campagnolo
October 30, 2025
After defeating Franco Stupaczuk and Juan Lebron, the No. 2 seeds of the Premier Padel Newgiza P2, Javi Garrido knelt down, perhaps reflecting on everything that has happened to him this season. The Spaniard, who just turned 25 a few days ago, has struggled to replicate his past results, slipping to 25th place in the FIP ranking. He has changed several partners this year, but alongside Brazilian Lucas Campagnolo, he pulled off a major upset in the Round of 16 at the ongoing tournament in Egypt. Their victory secured a place in the quarterfinals, which for Campagnolo will have a special flavor: a Brazilian derby, as on the other side of the net will be Lucas Bergamini, paired with Javi Leal. “Winning a match like this gives me the energy and confidence to keep believing in myself”, said Garrido, after competing in the afternoon session of a Thursday that will also feature the other three quarterfinals. In the morning, Momo Gonzalez and Fran Guerrero will face Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas, followed by the big match between Fede Chingotto/Ale Galan and Martin Di Nenno/Leo Augsburger. The day’s program on Centre Court will close with Jon Sanz and Paquito Navarro taking on Juan Tello and Edu Alonso.
WOMEN The pairing of Garrido and Campagnolo is the only unseeded duo – across both draws in Newgiza – to have reached the quarterfinals. In the women’s event, meanwhile, all eight seeded pairs will return to the court. Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez dropped just one game against Claudia Ordoñez and Candela Lucendo, and will now face Marina Guinart and Veronica Virseda. Also in the bottom half of the draw, Andrea Ustero and Sofia Araujo will meet Aranzazu Osoro and Victoria Iglesias. In the morning, the two quarterfinals in the top half will feature Caldera/Goenaga vs. Salazar/Calvo and Jensen/Alonso vs. Ortega/Icardo.
