First Dubai, then Espoo. Pol Hernandez and Guille Collado arrived in Gijon with two CUPRA FIP Tour titles won over the past two weeks. An outstanding run of form, confirmed by their victory in the opening round of the P2 event that began yesterday in Spain: Pol and Guille defeated Maxi Sanchez and Xisco Gil 7-6 6-3, qualifying for the round of 16 scheduled for tomorrow, where they will meet the number 3 seeds Franco Stupaczuk and Mike Yanguas. Inigo Jofre and Manuel Castaño on one side, and David Gala and Pablo Garcia on the other, were involved in an extraordinary tie-break, won 20-18, but Gala and Garcia nevertheless completed a comeback to prevail 6-7 6-2 6-2. Tolito Aguirre, last year’s finalist, had a more straightforward task, recording a 6-2 6-2 win alongside Alex Arroyo against Fernandez Lancha/Diestro.
Today the tournament moves into full swing, with the final eight matches of the men’s first round and the eight matches of the women’s first round, ahead of the debut of the world’s leading pairs, scheduled for tomorrow. Attention will be on Coki Nieto, who missed the Riyadh P1 and returns alongside Jon Sanz, with whom he won the 2024 Finals.
