Day 2, Paraguay and Uruguay win again: a decisive showdown between them for Doha in the men’s event

A place in Qatar is at stake in the men’s draw. After winning their opening matches on the first day of the FIP World Cup Qualifiers – South America, Paraguay and Uruguay confirmed their strong start on Day 2, winning their respective matches in the men’s event. The two national teams will now face each other in a decisive head-to-head clash, with the only place available in the men’s event in this qualifying round for Doha at stake.

 

The Paraguayan players defeated Venezuela 3-0. First, Facundo Dehnike and Adrian Miranda beat Alejandro Vargas Couri-Jose Alberto Mendez (6-0 6-1). Then Martin Abud-Matias Popovich and Sebastian Rodriguez-Pierre Petit defeated Roberto Rodriguez-Diego Alejandro Gonzalez (6-1 6-3) and Eduardo Andres Lopez-Santiago Andres Soto (6-1 6-2), respectively. Uruguay also produced an excellent performance, defeating Ecuador 3-0. In the first match, Higor Andres Ensslin-Juan Ignacio Artia beat Simon Andres Gomez-Roberto Carlos Pinargote Palma (6-3 6-0), while in the second and third matches, the pairs of Martin Araujo-Diego Sebastian Ramos and Rodrigo Sennatore-Nicolas Rosas defeated Carlos Andre Garcia-Sebastian Armijos (6-1 6-3) and Mateo Enrique Proano-Estefano Mateo Montoya (6-3 6-2), respectively. Uruguay and Paraguay currently lead the standings with 4 points, followed by Venezuela and Ecuador on two points. The final two matches, Uruguay-Paraguay and Ecuador-Venezuela, will be played at 2 pm local time (19 CEST).

 

After demonstrating their strength in the men’s event, the Paraguay and Uruguay national teams also won on Day 2 of the women’s draw. The home players in Asunción defeated Chile after a tie-break in the third and deciding match. Chile made a strong start with Catalina Arancibia-Trinidad Del Real defeating Yuri Kudo-Nicole Heyn (6-2 6-3), before Veronica Cepede-Olga Barreiro levelled the tie in the second match. Mariana Salsamendi-Maria Alejandra Vera secured the two points for Paraguay with a win over the Macarena Lobo-Amalia Bentjerodt duo (4-6 6-1 7-6). As in the men’s event, Uruguay defeated Ecuador 3-0, with victories for Miriam Morales-Cecilia Gasdia, Maria Jose Pintos Moleda-Camila David De Lima Gonzalez and Camila Belassi-Stephania Gaetan Monza. The group standings currently see Venezuela, Paraguay and Uruguay on four points, with Chile and Ecuador on three. On Day 3, scheduled to begin at 9 am local time (14 CEST), Chile will face Venezuela, while Paraguay will take on Ecuador. Then, no earlier than 7 pm local time (midnight CEST on 23 August), the final two matches will take place: Venezuela-Paraguay and Chile-Uruguay.
