Day 2. Mexico, Germany and Australia win again. Today the decisive group-stage round

BUENOS AIRES – In Buenos Aires, it is time for the decisive stage. The FIP Senior World Cup enters a crucial phase after two days of high-level competition: Day 3, on Wednesday 16 September, will conclude the group stage and determine the winners of each group. The group winners will compete for the top eight positions from the quarter-finals onwards. Spain (women) and Argentina (men) will defend their titles. The other national teams will remain in the Argentine capital and continue competing to determine the final standings: from 9th to 32nd position in the men’s competition, and from 9th to 26th in the women’s.

 

WOMEN Germany’s victory over Paraguay was the highlight of Day 2, with the tie ending 3-2 after a closely contested match: the decisive result came in the final match, as Tiedjen-Kruse defeated Madelaire-Calderini. The Germany-France clash will determine the first qualifier from Group B. Mexico and Portugal defeated Switzerland and Japan respectively, both by 4-1. The home team from Argentina, following their success on Day 1, also defeated Canada, winning every match in the tie. Brazil, Great Britain, Australia, Chile and the USA all recorded convincing 5-0 victories. The defending champions Spain, winners of the last three editions of the competition, had a rest day and will return to action against Chile, with first place in Group A at stake.

 

MEN Australia remain in the spotlight. After their opening-day victory against Venezuela, they recorded another positive result against Canada, winning 3-2. Tennis legend Pat Rafter, partnering Benzal, secured the decisive point by winning the final match of the tie. The direct clash between Australia and France will determine first place in Group C in a match that promises plenty of action. Alongside Rafter, there is another tennis legend: Frenchman Arnaud Clément, who was a Davis Cup winner in 2001 and an Australian Open finalist in the same year. Following the debut of home legend Miguel Lamperti, another star also made his first appearance: Agustin Gomez Silingo. Defending champions Argentina confirmed their first place in Group A by defeating Ukraine 5-0. Spain recorded the same result against Great Britain in Group B. Also standing out were the 4-1 victories for Mexico and Netherlands over Austria and Paraguay, and for Italy and Germany over Ireland and Egypt by 5-0.

 

DAY PROGRAMME The final day of the group stage will feature 26 matches. The morning session will begin at 9 am local time (2 pm CEST), with 10 women’s and six men’s matches scheduled. The afternoon matches will begin at 3 pm local time (8 pm CEST) at the earliest. Highlights of Day 3 include Spain-Chile and France-Germany in the women’s competition, and the South American clash between Argentina and Brazil in the men’s. Matches on Courts 1 and 2 will be streamed live on the FIP YouTube channel.
