Day5, Spain reach two finals. Argentina chase home glory, USA aim to make history

BUENOS AIRES – Spain will bid to complete a double, Argentina’s men will seek to claim the world title on home soil, while the USA will aim to make history in the women’s category. In Buenos Aires, it is finals day at the FIP Senior World CUP 2026. After winning the titles in 2018 and 2024 on home soil, and in 2022 in Las Vegas, the reigning Spanish champions are targeting a fourth consecutive title. To achieve this, they will have to overcome the United States, who are contesting their first final in this competition. In the men’s event, Argentina, winners of the last edition, will play Spain’s legends for the title in front of their home crowd. The finals will be broadcast live on the FIP YouTube channel.

 

MEN Once again, the ‘Superclasico’ between Spain and Argentina will decide the title: the same fixture was played in the first three editions of the competition, with Spain winning twice and Argentina once. The match was also the final of the FIP World Cup 2024, when Argentina triumphed thanks to the decisive point won by Tino Libaak and Leo Augsburger. The clash on Saturday 19 September promises a high-quality contest, with both teams having dominated every stage of the competition without dropping a single set to their opponents. In the semi-final, the ‘Seleccion Albiceleste’ defeated Italy 4-0 thanks to wins for the Allemandi/Lamperti, Gutierrez/Gomez Silingo, Lasaigues-Novillo and Auguste/Gattiker pairs. ‘La Roja’ secured their place in the final by beating France, featuring former tennis player Arnaud Clèment, 3-0, with victories for Santana/Limones, Sanmarti/Company and Semprun/Almazan. Italy-France will decide third place. Both teams have previously achieved this result: Italy in 2018 and ‘Les Bleus’ in 2024.

 

WOMEN The women’s semi-finals produced an entertaining contest and some closely fought matches. The USA defeated Belgium 3-2, securing the team’s first final in the FIP Senior World CUP. After losing the first match of the tie, the American legends responded with victories for Petrauskaite/Zubori, Neugarten/Kaczmarczyk and Magrini/Teer. Awaiting the USA in the final are the reigning champions Spain, who defeated the Netherlands 4-0. After Dominguez-Rivas and Sainz/Alonso won the first two matches, the pairs Castrillo/Vaquero and Gayoso/Wakonigg added further victories. The third-place play-off will see Belgium face the Netherlands, with both teams aiming to secure their first podium finish in the competition. In previous editions, third place was achieved by Italy (2024), France (2022) and Portugal (2018).

 

DAY’S SCHEDULE The morning session will begin at 9pm local time (2pm CEST), with the women’s finals Spain-USA (Court 1) and Belgium-Netherlands (Court 2). In the afternoon session Argentina-Spain (Court 1) and Italy-France (Court 2) will take to the court. All matches will be broadcast live on the FIP YouTube channel.
