Romera’s victory and emotion in Cordoba: “This is for you, Azuquita, my friend”

Winning a tournament is a special feeling, but doing so by dedicating the victory to the friend who introduced you to padel, on the anniversary of his passing, makes it even more meaningful. After securing the FIP Silver Cordoba title alongside Felipe Calleja, Jaume Romera shared a special message: “Today marks one year since the passing of the person who introduced me to this sport and was always by my side. Azuquita, I know you are watching over me from above. I love you, my friend! This is for you”.

Calleja and Romera triumphed after defeating the No. 1 seeds at this CUPRA FIP Tour event, Tolito Aguirre and Pablo Garcia, in a closely contested final decided by a third-set tie-break (7-6 4-6 7-6). In the semi-finals, the champions had overcome Sergio Arias Aznar-Aaron Garcia Rubio 6-2 6-2. “This is a reward for all the hard work and for never giving up,” said Calleja. “A great weekend, which started quietly but grew from match to match, culminating in this title, which means a great deal. Thank you to Jaume, my whole family, my friends and my team for all the support. We continue with more motivation than ever.”

In the women’s draw, the top-seeded pair Agueda Perez-Marta Caparros claimed the title. After defeating Lorena Vano and Carmen Castillon in the semi-finals (3-6 7-5 6-3), they won the title match against Paula Ferrán-Martina Vera (7-6 7-6). For them, it marked the end of two outstanding weeks: last week, they had been crowned champions of the FIP Silver in Westerbork. “Let’s keep going like this, team!” said Caparros.
