TURIN – From qualifying to the quarter-finals of the year’s final “golden tournament”. Nicolas Peña and Manuel Ramirez’s dream week continues at the FIP Gold Mediolanum Padel Cup in Turin. The 25-year-old from Malaga and the 18-year-old from Cadiz pulled off a major upset on Day 2 at Palavillage, beating Nacho Archieri and Pablo Sanchez, the 10th seeds, in three sets (7-6 0-6 6-4). The Spanish pair will now face Turin’s own Matteo Rosingana, a hugely popular home favourite who has reached his best result at a FIP Gold event, and Santino Giuliani. The two pairs will meet on Saturday, with a place in the semi-finals at stake. The tournament’s top two seeds, meanwhile, continued their winning runs. Javi Barahona and Nacho Piotto (1) eased past Bolumar/Ranera (6-3 6-0), while Alex Chozas and Juani Rubini beat French pair Biron/Basso 6-1 6-3 in the evening. Pedro Melendez and Daniel Luna also progressed, defeating Vera/Giménez 6-4 6-1. They will face Santino Contreras and Santi Pineda in tomorrow’s quarter-finals, after the latter beat Rodriguez/Nicocia 6-3 6-4.
WOMEN’S DRAW Lucia Sainz and Leti Manquillo secured their place in the quarter-finals with a 6-4 6-1 win over Corrales/Di Battista. Among the seeded pairs, Julia Polo and Ana Dominguez also impressed, beating Villar/Casero 6-2 6-2, as did Amanda Lopez and Camila Fassio, who defeated Radu/Muñoz 6-3 6-2. Daiara Valenzuela and Teresa Moriñigo also enjoyed a successful day, beating Lambert/Robinson 6-1 6-3. The fifth seeds will be back on court tomorrow at 2 pm to face Sainz/Manquillo, in the first match of the day on Campo Lube.
