March 20, 2026
At the Rafa Nadal Tennis Centre Costa Mujeres, it was a day of twists, excitement and surprises. In the women’s draw, the biggest upset featured Italy’s Giulia Dal Pozzo and Spain’s Nuria Rodriguez, who had previously played for a long period alongside another Italian, Carolina Orsi: Dal Pozzo and Rodriguez, with a 7-6 3-6 6-3 win over Tamara Icardo and Claudia Jensen (5), earned a meeting with the world number 1 pair, Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay, who advanced with a double 6-2 victory over Jessica Castelló and Lorena Rufo. All the other seeded pairs also progressed to the quarter-finals, scheduled from 16:00 local time (22:00 CET): notable was the comeback by Paula Josemaria and Bea Gonzalez, who were 5-1 down in the third set against Bea Caldera and Carmen Goenaga but managed to win 7-5 after a two-hour and 34-minute match.
MEN There were also surprises in the men’s draw, where only four of the eight seeded pairs reached the quarter-finals. Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia were pushed to the limit, only prevailing in a third-set tie-break against Pablo Lijó and Maxi Arce (3-6 6-2 7-6); the top seeds will now face Jairo Bautista and Lucas Campagnolo in the quarter-finals. Last year’s finalists also progressed: Tolito Aguirre, partnering Alex Arroyo, defeated Fran Guerrero and Paquito Navarro in three sets, while Gonza Alfonso, alongside Sanyo Gutierrez, beat Javi Garrido and Lucas Bergamini 6-3 7-5 to set up a meeting with Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan. The strong run of Pol Hernandez and Guille Collado also continues, with a quarter-final against Juan Lebron and Leo Augsburger ahead.
