Day4. A week of surprises: Sanyo, Gonza, Tolito and their strong connection with Mexico
March 21, 2026
Another unpredictable day in Cancún, marked by surprises and notable stories. Among them is the strong connection with Mexico of Sanyo Gutierrez: the Argentine legend had not reached a semi-final on the Premier Padel circuit since March two years ago, when he advanced to the last four in Mexico (in Acapulco) alongside Paquito Navarro. Gonza Alfonso and Tolito Aguirre also confirmed their particular affinity with Cancún: last year’s finalists (defeated by Juan Lebron and Franco Stupaczuk) produced the two main upsets of the quarter-finals, this time with different partners. Gonza and Sanyo eliminated Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan with a 7-5 6-4 scoreline; Tolito and Alex Arroyo (the latter competing in his first Premier Padel semi-final) defeated Stupaczuk and Mike Yanguas 6-3 6-3. Gutierrez and Alfonso will now face Juan Lebron and Leo Augsburger, who beat Pol Hernandez and Guille Collado 6-3 6-1; Aguirre and Arroyo will instead meet Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia, who advanced following the retirement of Lucas Campagnolo and Jairo Bautista after four games.
WOMEN The semi-final day at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Centre Costa Mujeres will open at 16:00 local time, 22:00 CET, with the women’s draw, featuring only two of the top four seeded pairs. The new contenders are the number 8 seeds Marina Guinart and Veronica Virseda (7-5 6-3 over Ari Sanchez and Andrea Ustero) and the number 6 seeds Marta Ortega and Martina Calvo (6-3 3-6 6-4 over Claudia Fernandez and Sofia Araujo), who will face respectively Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay (6-1 6-1 over Giulia Dal Pozzo and Nuria Rodriguez) and Paula Josemaria and Bea Gonzalez (6-2 6-2 over Ale Salazar and Ale Alonso).
