Another page in padel history was written in Buenos Aires. A crowd of 16,920 spectators filled the Estadio Mary Terán de Weiss to watch the P1 semi-finals in the Argentine capital: never before had so many people attended a match in this sport, surpassing even the previous record of 16,156, also set at the Buenos Aires P1 last year. A packed and passionate atmosphere carried home favourite Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay into the final when the match appeared lost: after saving a match point in the second set at 6-3 6-5 for Claudia Fernandez and Sofia Araujo, the number 1 seeds staged a comeback to win 3-6 7-6 6-4 in three hours and three minutes, earning another opportunity to claim a title against the other pair at the centre of the circuit’s new rivalry. Paula Josemaria and Bea Gonzalez also needed three sets, recovering after losing the first 6-2 to Ari Sanchez and Andrea Ustero before taking the next two 7-5 6-4. It will therefore be the sixth consecutive final between the top two seeded pairs: Delfi and Gemma triumphed in Cancun, followed by four successive titles for Paulita and Bea in Miami, Newgiza, Brussels and Asuncion.
MEN Clasico calls for Clasico. Following the women’s final, which will begin at 14:00 local time (19:00 CEST), the men’s final will take place not before 17:00 in Buenos Aires, with Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia once again facing Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan. It will be their 34th meeting, with Arturito and Agus leading the head-to-head 21-12. While both women’s semi-finals went to three sets, the leading contenders in the men’s draw closed out their matches in straight sets: first Coello and Tapia defeated Franco Stupaczuk and Mike Yanguas 6-2 7-6, then the ‘Chingalan’ pair overcame Juan Lebron and Leo Augsburger 6-0 6-3.
Three Argentinians will take to the court at Parque Roca on finals day: first Delfi Brea, then Agustin Tapia and Fede Chingotto. The people of Buenos Aires are ready for another memorable day.
