Day 3. Quarter-finals get underway: women’s ‘El Clasico’ Argentina-Spain live on the FIP YouTube channel

BUENOS AIRES – With the group stage now complete, the FIP Senior World Cup in Buenos Aires enters the quarter-finals. Day 4, Thursday 17 September, immediately features a clash between the two women’s dream teams: defending champions Spain will face Argentina, the host nation. The players taking to the court promise a high-level contest, from Spanish legends Lucia Sainz, a former world No. 1, and Lorena Alonso to Selección Albiceleste players Silvana Campus and Nelida Brito. Spain-Argentina will be broadcast live on the FIP YouTube channel.

 

WOMEN In the top half of the draw for the first eight positions, alongside Spain-Argentina, Sweden-Netherlands will see the respective winners of Groups E and D face each other. Sweden topped its group by defeating Australia and Gibraltar, while the Netherlands secured first place by defeating Denmark and Austria. In the opposite half, the quarter-finals will feature Brazil-Belgium and USA-France. The United States have also shown their strength in Group G, one of the two four-team groups: in the decisive match for first place, the Americans defeated Mexico 3-2. The teams that did not win their respective groups will compete from the quarter-finals onwards in three draws to determine the remaining positions in the standings:

 

9th-16th place: runners-up from each group

17th-24th place: third-placed teams from each group

25th-26th place: fourth-placed teams from Groups G and H

 

MEN After dominating Group A, defending champions Argentina are ready to face Finland in the quarter-finals. The Selección Albiceleste have already demonstrated their strength: as well as fielding legends Miguel Lamperti and Agustin Gomez Silingo, they won all 15 matches played across the three ties in the group. Spain have been equally dominant and will face Portugal in the next match. In the quarter-finals, France, the men’s bronze medallists at the last edition, will face the Netherlands. France topped Group C by defeating Australia 4-1. In the third match of the tie, Australian tennis legend Pat Rafter defeated former French tennis player Arnaud Clement, a 2001 Davis Cup winner. Completing the quarter-final line-up are Italy, Group E winners, and Sweden. The teams that did not win their respective groups will compete from the quarter-finals onwards in three draws to determine the remaining positions in the standings:

DAY PROGRAMME A total of 29 matches will be played on quarter-final day. The morning session, featuring the women’s matches, will begin at 9 am local time (2 pm CEST). The afternoon session will begin no earlier than 3 pm local time (8 pm CEST). In addition to Spain-Argentina, three other matches will be broadcast live on the FIP YouTube channel: Italy-Sweden (men), USA-France (women) and Argentina-Finland (men).
