Day3. Nieto and Sanz, another marathon. All top seeds through to the quarter-finals
March 5, 2026
Edu Alonso and Juan Tello, who eliminated Paquito Navarro and Fran Guerrero in the first round, are the only pair outside the seeded teams to have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Gijon P2. Friday’s quarter-finals are therefore highly anticipated and will begin at 10:00 CET, accompanying fans throughout the day at the Palacio de Deportes de la Guía Presidente Adolfo Suárez. The Spanish P2 marked the seasonal debut of Coki Nieto, who missed the Riyadh P1 through injury and reunited with Jon Sanz, with whom he triumphed at the 2024 Finals in Barcelona: two three-set victories for the number 6 seeds, including a 7-5 3-6 6-3 win over Alex Chozas and Tino Libaak that secured a place in the quarter-finals, where they will face Juan Lebron and Leo Augsburger, who opened with a 6-2 6-1 win over Tolito Aguirre and Alex Arroyo. Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia also dropped a set but still advanced to the next round, thanks to a 6-3 6-7 6-3 victory over Pablo Lijó and Maxi Arce. Tomorrow they will face Martin Di Nenno and Momo Gonzalez (7). Alonso/Tello–Yanguas/Stupaczuk and Garrido/Bergamini–Chingotto/Galan are the other quarter-finals.
WOMEN The eight best pairs in the world will contest the places in the semi-finals in the women’s tournament. Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay benefited from the retirement of Marta Barrera and Jimena Velasco at 6-1 3-0; Paula Josemaria and Bea Gonzalez (2) recorded a 6-3 6-2 win over Alix Collombon and Jana Montes. Riyadh champions Andrea Ustero and Ari Sanchez also progressed, thanks to a 6-4 6-0 victory over Melania Merino and Letizia Maria Manquillo. If they win again tomorrow, respectively against Ale Salazar and Ale Alonso and against Marina Guinart and Veronica Virseda, Paula and Ari would face each other for the first time as opponents.
