Abbate-Montiel: third consecutive victory in Cyprus

Flavio Abbate and Álvaro Montiel continue their winning run and complete a treble in Cyprus. After the victories achieved in the two FIP Bronze tournaments held in this country in April, the pair also claimed the title at the FIP Silver Cyprus I. The triumph came thanks to a final victory against the tournament’s top seeds, and recent winners of the FIP Bronze in Spain on Isla de la Palma, Enrique Goenaga and Andrés Fernández Lancha (4-6 6-1 6-4), ranked 55th and 59th respectively in the FIP Ranking. In the semi-finals Abbate and Montiel had defeated Facundo Domínguez and Teo Zapata (3-6 6-3 6-3). “Champions in Cyprus” said Abbate after the triumph . For the winning pair, this marks their third title of the season on the CUPRA FIP Tour, confirming their excellent form”.

 

Turning to the women’s draw, Jimena Velasco (28) and Marta Barrera (27) were crowned queens of Cyprus. The two players lifted the trophy after defeating Victoria Kurz and Nati López Díaz (6-4 6-4) in the final, the latter having won last week’s FIP Bronze Cyprus II. In the semi-finals, the champions overcame Marta Arellano and Rebeca López (6-3 2-6 6-2). For Velasco and Barrera, the title won in Cyprus was their second of 2026: in mid-April they had triumphed at the FIP Silver in Mumbai. “Champions of Cyprus – said Velasco after the victory -. Now we return to the court to prepare for the next tournaments”.
