Thanks to their victory at the FIP Silver Vila Real de Santo Antonio (Portugal), played alongside Javi Ruiz, Gonzalo Rubio has claimed the 15th title of his career on the CUPRA FIP Tour. The champions lifted the winner’s trophy after defeating, in a final decided only in the third set, FIP Ranking No.64 and No.58 Nacho Vilariño and Mario Del Castillo (6-7 7-6 6-1). The semi-final played by the tournament winners against Manu Castaño and Xisco Gil also went to a third set (4-6 6-1 6-3). For Ruiz (42), the title won in Portugal was his first of the year on this circuit, while Rubio (41) had already secured two tournaments: the FIP Silver in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the FIP Bronze in Mumbai, India. “We are the champions of the FIP Silver Vila Real de Santo Antonio – said Rubio after the victory -. I am happy and proud of the effort we made. The final, played against a very strong pair, was extremely tough”. Ruiz also commented on the triumph: “I am proud of the huge effort we made to win the title”.
The winning run continues for Raquel Eugenio (23) and Martina Fassio (24): after last week’s victory in Gran Canaria, they have also triumphed in Portugal. The champions, after defeating Ana Nogueira and Laura Luján in the semi-finals (5-7 6-0 6-0), won the final against the No.2 seeds Marta Barrera (27) and Jimena Velasco (28) in convincing fashion (6-2 6-0). In 2026, these two players had already won together at the FIP Silver in Nola, while Eugenio, alongside Lucía Sainz, had also claimed two further titles: the FIP Platinum in Marseille and the FIP Silver in Parma. “Champions in Portugal! – said Eugenio after the victory -. We played solidly throughout the entire tournament”. The Argentine Fassio is already looking ahead to the Premier Padel P1 in Buenos Aires: “Now comes a very special tournament for me.”
