Day 5. Alonso-Jensen, queen checkmate. Triay back at number 1

Back on the padel throne without stepping onto the court. Gemma Triay, forced to skip the tournament due to Delfi Brea’s injury, will return to number 1 in the FIP ranking on Monday in a summer that continues to bring upsets at the top of the world FIP ranking. Ale Alonso and Claudia Jensen, one of the last pairs to be formed in the women’s draw of the Qatar Airways Premier Padel Tour, achieved the feat of the day and of the entire week at the Premier Padel Betclic Bordeaux P2. At the Patinoire de Mériadeck, the Spanish and Argentine pair won 6-2 6-3 versus Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez, winners of four titles this season and coming from their success in Valladolid. The semi-final in the top half of the draw, scheduled to start not before 5 p.m., will see two exceptional talents, long-time partners, take to the court, as Ale Alonso will face Andrea Ustero, who is still playing with Sofia Araujo. The number 4 seeds in the French draw defeated Jessica Castelló and Lorena Rufo 6-3 6-1. In the bottom half, Bea Gonzalez and Claudia Fernandez – the highest seeds remaining in the competition – will face Bea Caldera and Carmen Goenaga, who won 6-0 6-4 in an hour and 15 minutes against Aranzazu Osoro and Martina Calvo, in their last match together, after beating Lucia Sainz and Patty Llaguno 6-3 6-2.

MEN The most exciting match of the day, but probably also of the season, was the one won by Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia versus Momo Gonzalez and Jon Sanz. Two hours and 24’ minutes of incredible battle, with the world number 1s, after winning the first set 6-3, finding themselves in serious difficulty against the number 5 seeds, who, after taking the match to a third set thanks to an 8-6 tiebreak win after saving three match points, came very close to winning the match. However, the second tiebreak, in the decisive set, smiled on Coello and Tapia (13-11), who, after also saving three match points, in the semi-final will face Lucas Bergamini and Paquito Navarro (6), who overturned the predictions and beat Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas 6-4 6-4. In the bottom half, Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan (7-5, 7-5 against Pablo Cardona and Leo Augsburger) will try to reach the final again after their semi-final defeat in Valladolid, facing Martin Di Nenno and Juan Tello (7-6, 6-2 versus José Diestro and Juanlu Esbri).
