The giants return: Coello-Tapia and Brea-Triay back on the throne
June 7, 2026
The world No. 1s are back. Arturo Coello, Agustin Tapia, Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay chose the same evening to reclaim a title that had eluded them since Cancún. They did so in Rome, at the BNL Italy Major Premier Padel, in front of a packed Foro Italico (more than 9.000 fans) that celebrated a week of padel destined to be remembered for many reasons. From the longest match ever played on the Premier Padel circuit (the semi-final won by Ari Sanchez and Andrea Ustero against Paula Josemaria and Bea Gonzalez) to the first Major semi-final reached by an Italian player (Giulia Dal Pozzo). Then came the finals, which provided further highlights, with Sanchez and Ustero, as well as Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan, falling after strong performances. It was a second Rome title for Coello and Tapia after their 2023 triumph, and a second consecutive Rome title for Brea and Triay, with Triay having also won in 2023 alongside Marta Ortega.
WOMEN Fatigue from the four-hour-and-12-minute semi-final against Paula Josemaria and Bea Gonzalez was evident in the legs of Ari Sanchez and Andrea Ustero, but only in the opening set, which was dominated by the world No. 1 pair. After two early breaks, Sanchez and Ustero saved a point that would have made it 0-5, getting on the scoreboard with a Star Point, but Brea and Triay won two more games to take the first set. The second set was far more balanced, although it too began with Brea and Triay moving ahead. Sanchez and Ustero responded with an immediate break back. Leading 4-2, the top seeds then lost three consecutive games, but when Sanchez and Ustero served for the set, they were unable to close it out, conceding two breaks in succession before an error from Ari Sanchez ended the match 6-1 7-5. “Winning this tournament is hugely important for us after losing five consecutive finals”, said Triay. “There were 2,000 points at stake, and we played a great final after a week in which we had faced some difficulties. How will we celebrate? Definitely in an Italian restaurant”. Brea, like her partner, celebrated with her family and team: “We won this tournament in a full stadium, with a very special atmosphere”, added the Argentine. “We are extremely happy with this victory”.
MEN Then it was time for the ‘Clasico’, with Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan arriving on the back of four consecutive victories over Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia, as well as two straight titles at the Foro Italico. The first break points of the match came at 5-5, with the world No. 1s—who, thanks to this victory, return to the top of the Race standings—immediately taking their opportunity. Another break followed at the start of the second set, helped by a missed smash from Galan and an X3 winner from Tapia. However, when serving for the match, Coello also missed a smash, reopening the contest. The second set eventually reached its natural conclusion in a tie-break: Galan clipped the net tape with a volley at 5-4, and Coello and Tapia made no mistake, with Tapia’s final smash sealing a 7-5 7-6 victory. The match featured 58 winners and 21 unforced errors from Coello and Tapia, compared to 49 winners and 24 unforced errors from Chingotto and Galan. “This is a special victory for us”, said Coello. “Rome is a very important stop on the season calendar, and we are delighted with this title. Thanks to Agus, thanks to the team—everything worked perfectly. Now it is time to celebrate”. “We are very emotional”, added Tapia. “This victory represents what we have been working towards for a long time. It is difficult to maintain this level, playing finals every week (tonight’s was our 23rd in a row) but at the same time we are happy that this journey continues”.
From Rome, the Qatar Airways Premier Padel Tour now moves to Spain, where the Valencia P1 begins tomorrow. The challenge continues.
