COTONOU – The favourites delivered. Portugal’s Gustavo Nunes and Spain’s Tonet Sans celebrated the title at the FIP Bronze in Cotonou, the first-ever CUPRA FIP Tour event in Benin. The top seeds in the men’s draw defeated Morocco’s Mohamed Alami and Egypt’s Georges Wakim 7-6 6-4 in the final. Their opponents had enjoyed an impressive tournament despite falling short in the deciding match. For 19-year-old Nunes, it was his first title on the circuit, following the final he reached alongside Sans at the FIP Bronze in Baku last April. “Finally, I can lift the trophy at a FIP circuit tournament”, said the Portuguese player after the win. “It’s been an almost perfect and very positive year, but we felt that a tournament victory was missing. I’m so happy”. “What a feeling to achieve one of our goals for this season”, added Sans. “Congratulations on your first title, Gusi. It’s a pleasure to have been by your side for a moment like this”.
In the women’s draw, the celebrations belonged to two more Portuguese players, Patricia Ribeiro and Mafalda Marques, who defeated Dora Chamli and Nelita Brito 6-4 6-4 in the final. “My second international title of the year with my friend Patricia”, said Marques. “Thank you for always being by my side. I’m very proud of our work and our team”.
